Poole Academy of Wing Chun is a friendly and safe place to train with an emphasis on helping individuals to develop core skills for real world situations. This is achieved through pressure testing the applications of practical self-defence techniques, while aiming to encourage students to achieve a very high level of Wing Chun Kung Fu. If you would like to know more,  please just get in touch.

Wing Chun teaches you how to punch and kick using your body structure and positioning, so you can beat a much larger and stronger attacker. All movements are highly effective and extremely fast,. This makes Wing Chun Kung Fu an ideal Self Defense system for women, men and children of all ages.

Wing Chun origins by Martin Coales

Wing Chun is said to have begun in The Qing Dynasty era in a shaolin temple where a women studied kung fu and found that she could not compete against stronger male opponents so fused together selected techniques form the different animal forms to balance the odds in her favour. Later she passed this knowledge on supposedly to a female who was in trouble with a local war lord. This then was passed on and kept in the family passed on to next generations. Later, this was taught to kids from rich families and was known as referred to as a womens martial art. This was primarily used to fight in bars and small alleyways. Ip man originally was from a rich family who was taught this art, he then fled to Macau for a day before the Japanese invaded and then ended up in Hong Kong where he had no work so decided to start teaching to the public Wing Chun. It is said that he had several challenges as it was back then and defeated them all. Ip mans first famous student was Wong Shun Leung (Gong Sau Wong) and Wong then taught Bruce Lee, Gary Lam (our linage) and many others. Sifu Gary Lam trained Wing Chun exclusively with Wong Shun Leung for 15 years and was his head coach in Hong Kong for 6 years. As Wong Shun Leung’s top student, Sifu Lam put his Wing Chun skills to the test by entering tournaments and destroying the competition. His excellent fighting skills made him the undefeated champion of the Hong Kong full Contact Tournament in 1978-1979, and his trophies and titles are too numerous to mention.
